Food fraud and the perceived integrity of
European food imports into China

¨Food fraud is defined as food deliberately placed on the market, for financial gain, with the purpose of deceiving the consumer. Food fraud includes the deliberate and intentional substitution, addition, tampering, or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients, or food packaging; or false or misleading statements about a product.

¨The intentional deception of consumers differentiates food fraud from food safety incidents. Food safety incidents are characterized as unintentional acts leading to unintentional harm to public health.
